The 2012 season provided some phenomenal highs as well as disappointing lows for the Assassins Rugby Football Club.
The second division men’s team, anchored by a very young core of players, produced an impressive ten wins to go along with just three losses in regular season play. This earned a date with the U of M Wombats on semifinals day. A strong performance saw the second division men advance to the final where they met the unbeaten Wanderers, who had faced their stiffest challenges of the year in two close games against the young Assassins.
The second division … produced an impressive ten wins to go along with just three losses
Unfortunately, the team showed some inexperience in the final, and was unable to prevent the Wanderers from winning the championship and completing their perfect season. There is no doubt that the young players will be anxious to use this year’s experience as a springboard to more success in 2013.
The first division men’s team struggled to find any kind of consistency in 2012. Despite looking great on paper and showing flashes of promise the on-field product never quite matched expectations. The team finished with a disappointing 4W-10L-1T record and was forced to watch the playoffs from the stands. The team will be looking to channel some of the frustration from 2012 into off-season training and improved results in 2013. Despite some of the problems faced this year the first division men have the feel of a team that is very close to returning to prominence in the league.
The Assassins women scored over 1000 points… going undefeated throughout the regular season.
2012 for the Assassins RFC will be remembered most for the performance of the women’s team. After losing by a try to the Brandon Barbarians in the 2011 final the ladies were keen to finish the job this time. Few people could have predicted just how dominant the 2012 Assassins women would be. The list of superlatives could go on for pages, but will be distilled into a few key statistics. During the regular season the women won all fourteen games in which they played, outscoring their opponents by the staggering total of 1176-68. That is not a typo. The Assassins women scored over one thousand points in going undefeated throughout the regular season.
The Assassins women captured the provincial championship (91-17)
Of course this would have all meant very little if the team went on to somehow lose in the playoffs. In the semifinal the ladies turned in another excellent performance in a convincing win over the Wanderers. This brought them to the championship game, where they would meet the Sturgeon Creek Rowdies. The women showed up focused and did what they had done all year. With a 91-17 win in the final the Assassins women captured the provincial championship and finished off their perfect season in style. Congratulations ladies!
Good luck to all of the Assassins teams in 2013!
