Andy Black made a wise decision to up his rugby game by moving to New Zealand for the year! Andy has been a key contributor for the Assassins RFC for the past few seasons after joining from one of the club’s feeder schools, Windsor Park Collegiate. Andy’s work ethic was always noticeable from when he first started playing with the club at age 18. Until a shoulder injury in Brandon late into the 2019 season; Andy consistently played for the 3rds, 2nds and 1sts and the Senior Provincial Team, mostly as a back.
Andy has linked up with the Grammar TEC Rugby Club in Auckland. Andy has enjoyed and been challenged in his first bit of game time playing in a new positions and against serious competition. Andy explained that the game in New Zealand is mentally quicker in regards to organization. He specifically mentioned the defensive area of the game is where he has learned a fair bit in a short period of time like what decisions he should make in certain defensive situations. He noted that the culture is amazing at his new club in Auckland. The club fields 10 different teams and there is no disconnect between any of them. Andy’s club in Winnipeg, the Assassins RFC knows Andy will work hard and improve his game. We are excited to hear about how his journey progresses and know that he will come back and lock down a division one spot for years to come!
